Ohio Minimum Wage Increase

January 5th, 2009

By Aaron Harrison

Effective January 1, 2009, Ohio employers who gross more than $267,000 will increase to $7.30 per hour for non-tipped employees and $3.65 per hour for tipped employees.

The change is mandated by the Constitutional Amendment approved by Ohio voters in November, 2007 which requires an annual increase in the minimum wage that is tied to the rate of inflation.

Minimum wage for businesses grossing less than $267,000, and for employees 14 or 15 years of age remains at $6.55 per hour for the time being.  Effective July 24, 2009, the minimum wage for that class of employers and employees will increase to $7.25 per hour.

A summary of the new provisions can be found on the Ohio Department of Commerce website via this link.
